In outdoor environments, LED screens face various challenges from harsh weather conditions, making waterproofing crucial for ensuring their long-term stable operation. Below is a detailed step-by-step guide for waterproofing outdoor LED screens.

 

I. Preliminary Preparation

 

1. Understanding Waterproof Ratings

The waterproof rating of outdoor LED screens is usually indicated by IP (Ingress Protection), such as IP65. An IP65 rating means that the device can prevent dust ingress and withstand low-pressure water jets from any direction without harmful effects. When selecting an LED screen, ensure that its waterproof rating meets the requirements for outdoor use.

 

2. Preparing Waterproof Materials and Tools

Waterproof Enclosure: Choose an enclosure with excellent waterproof performance. The material should have good weather resistance and corrosion resistance to withstand long-term erosion by rainwater, snowmelt, and other liquids.

Waterproof Sealant or Waterproof Sealing Strips: Used to fill and seal gaps between various components of the display screen to prevent water infiltration.

Waterproof Cables: Used to connect different parts of the display screen to prevent water from entering the cables and causing short circuits or other faults.

Waterproof Cover: Consider installing a waterproof cover to protect the display screen during outdoor installation.

Other Tools: Such as screwdrivers, wrenches, electric drills, and glue guns, for installing and fixing waterproof materials.

 

II. Waterproofing Treatment During Production and Manufacturing

 

1. PCB Board Corrosion Protection

During the production of LED screens, the PCB board should be treated for corrosion protection. For example, applying a conformal coating on the surface of the PCB board can prevent it from being affected by moisture, oxidation, and corrosion.

 

2. Selecting High-Quality Components

Power supplies and power cables should be of high quality to ensure good waterproof performance and stability. Additionally, solder joints, which are the most vulnerable to corrosion, should be properly protected.

 

3. Waterproof Enclosure Design

Sealing Requirements: The selected waterproof enclosure should have good sealing properties, and the screen body must meet the corresponding waterproof rating (such as IP65).

Structural Design: The enclosure should be treated with plastic spraying on both the inner and outer surfaces, providing functions such as corrosion resistance, moisture resistance, oxidation resistance, and flame retardancy. Meanwhile, the enclosure should facilitate scheduling, aging tests, on-site maintenance, packaging, transportation, and on-site installation and disassembly.

Drainage Design: Install drainage holes at the bottom or sides of the enclosure to allow timely drainage of rainwater or snowmelt that may seep in. For back panel waterproofing, if small strip-shaped display aluminum composite panels are used, a row of drainage holes can be designed underneath them, which is beneficial for both waterproofing and heat dissipation of the display screen.

 

4. Unit Board Waterproofing Treatment

Fixing Method: Confirm whether the outdoor unit board is fixed with screws or attached with magnets. Screw fixing provides better results, but magnet attachment can also be feasible in some cases as long as there is a waterproof groove on the unit board kit.

Waterproof Coating: Depending on the material of the unit board, a professional waterproof coating may be required to enhance its waterproof performance.

 

III. Waterproofing Treatment During On-Site Installation and Construction

 

1. Structural Design

The structural design should combine prevention and drainage. After determining the structure, consider using sealing strip materials with characteristics such as a hollow blister tube structure, low compression set, and high elongation at break. After selecting the sealing strip material, design appropriate contact surfaces and contact forces based on its properties to ensure that the sealing strip is compressed to a dense state.

 

2. Sealing Treatment

Sealing of Joints: The joints of the display screen enclosure should be sealed with waterproof sealant or waterproof sealing strips to prevent water infiltration.

Sealing of Connections and Interfaces: Particularly at connections and interfaces, waterproof sealant or waterproof sealing strips should be used for enhanced sealing. For example, focus on protection at positions where waterproof slots are installed.

Back Panel Waterproofing: The back panel of the outdoor LED screen should also be waterproofed. If aluminum composite panels are used as the back panel, they should be cut to the appropriate size and sealed with self-tapping screws to ensure sealing. For large screens with a height greater than 1 meter, it is recommended to weld the frame with stainless steel, cover the back with a door, and drill drainage holes at the bottom.

 

3. Installing a Waterproof Cover

Consider installing a waterproof cover to protect the display screen during outdoor installation. The waterproof cover should have good sealing properties and weather resistance to effectively prevent rainwater intrusion.

 

4. Using Waterproof Cables

Use waterproof cables to connect different parts of the display screen to prevent water from entering the cables and causing short circuits or other faults. When connecting the cables, ensure that the connections are well sealed.

 

IV. Waterproof Testing After Installation

 

1. Simulated Rainwater Testing

After installation, waterproof testing should be conducted to ensure that the waterproof performance meets the requirements. Tools such as water guns can be used to simulate rainwater intrusion, and the display screen can be subjected to prolonged soaking or spray testing. Observe whether water infiltrates the interior of the display screen and whether the display screen can function normally.

 

2. Checking Drainage Holes

Check that the drainage holes are unobstructed to prevent blockages. If the drainage holes are blocked, water will not be able to drain in a timely manner, affecting the waterproof performance of the display screen.

 

V. Waterproof Maintenance During Daily Use

 

1. Regular Inspections

Regularly inspect the enclosure and circuit board of the display screen for damage or aging, and promptly replace damaged components. At the same time, clean the surface of the display screen to remove dust and debris, ensuring good heat dissipation performance.

 

2. Frequent Usage

For outdoor screens, frequent usage is necessary. Because a working display screen generates some heat, which can evaporate some water vapor, greatly reducing the possibility of short circuits caused by moisture. It is recommended to use the LED screen at least once a week during the rainy season and turn it on at least once a month for 2 hours or more.

 

3. Waterproof Remedial Measures

If the display screen accidentally gets wet, the following remedial measures should be taken immediately:

Quick Drying: Use a blower or other tools to completely dry the wet LED screen body as quickly as possible.

Power-On Aging: After the screen body is completely dried, perform power-on aging. The specific steps are as follows:

Set the brightness (full white) to 10% and perform power-on aging for 8-12 hours.

Set the brightness (full white) to 30% and perform power-on aging for 12 hours.

Set the brightness (full white) to 60% and perform power-on aging for 12-24 hours.

Set the brightness (full white) to 80% and perform power-on aging for 12-24 hours.

Set the brightness (full white) to 100% and perform power-on aging for 8-12 hours.

 

After completing the above steps, the LED screen body will basically return to normal. However, the following points should be noted during the handling process:

Do not place the wet LED screen body in an aviation box, as this can easily damage the LED lights.

If the warehouse floods, the aviation boxes may also get wet. All aviation boxes should be exposed to the sun to prevent moisture from evaporating into the LED screen after the boxes are packed.

All wet LED screens that are not promptly treated may be more or less affected in terms of stability. During the emergency handling process, the screen body may experience continuous dead lights after being powered on.

LED screen bodies that have been in aviation boxes for more than 3 days after getting wet basically have no repair value and should be handled with caution.
